Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament

In our daily lives, often times, we are so occupied with our routine obligations, that we do not find a proper time to be on our own. We may have time to sit down to take a break, but it is hardly long enough so as to reflect on the way we lead our lives.

An annual period of spiritual recollection is a must for followers of Jesus who have consecrated their lives to him. The yearly spiritual retreat for priests and religious is not only an exhortation of the church, but a necessity of the soul to be in a closer contact with God during some periods in our busy daily lives.

This year, I had the opportunity to attend the spiritual talks along with the Mexican Guadalupe Fathers working in Hong Kong at the Sisters of Saint Paul´s Retreat House in Sheung Shui during the fourth week of October. The retreat master was also a Mexican priest, a member of the same Society I belong to. He was my professor of Theology during the formation years in the seminary. Even if the content of the talks was the same he once gave us as seminarians in those years, still the experience was completely different, because, first of all, I did not clearly recall what he taught us then, even if I could remember the topic and some passages of his lectures. But most important, while the content of the meditations may have been the same, yet the context of the retreat was totally different. Back in the seminary, I was a seminarian in the process of formation to become a priest, thus my professor addressed a group of younger men eager to learn more about the mystery of life and the life of ministry to the people of God. This time round, the same priest was conducting the same retreat to a group of no longer young priests with diverse pastoral experiences and approaches to the consecrated life.

The Word of God is always the same, yet so new and fresh that every time we read the Bible or listen to its content we experience the presence of God with us in a different way, always guiding us at that particular moment of our journey towards him.

Not only priests and religious sisters and brothers, but all the lay people at large need to find a space and a time to encounter God in our hectic lives to experience his merciful love and his saving graces that will enable us to become devote and true followers of Jesus.
